Here at Verner - Cadby Inc., we love vehicle safety ratings. We rely on them as heavily as the public does, using them to gauge future automobile purchases for us and our families. What are vehicle safety ratings? In particular, what's a five-star frontal crash rating?
Vehicle Safety Ratings 101
Vehicle safety rantings are one- to five-star ratings indicating a vehicle's crashworthiness. Crashworthiness refers to how well a vehicle can withstand a collision, diffuse impact and protect occupants from injury. Five starts is the highest rating. It suggests that vehicle occupants are less than 10 percent likely to sustain injury during a collision.
Other Crash Ratings
The NHTSA tests nearly every passenger vehicle on the market. Consequently, they focus their efforts on the most common types of collisions:
- Side Pole
- Frontal
- Rollover
- Side barrier
Each test involves an average size male dummy and a small female dummy seated up front. Newer tests even include smaller dummies (children) seated in back rows. For each test, experts issue an overall starred rating and, occasionally, individual ratings for front and back seat occupants.
